Upcoming New Technologies
Top performance super-cars and concepts of 2013
We've already taken a look at the best green concept cars of 2013; now it's time to turn our attention to the other end of the car-tech spectrum and focus on full-blown, engine-growling, asphalt-scarring performance cars. The year was a big one for high-tech, high-priced supercar hardware, seeing the restart of several iconic lineages, extravagant special-edition birthday presents, and numerous all-new start-ups with intriguing ideas.
Aston Martins
Twenty-thirteen was a big birthday year for the exotic sports car industry. Old man Aston Martin blew out 100 candles, and McLaren and Lamborghinimet it halfway at 50. A pair of legendary sports car rivals also joined the celebration – the Chevy Corvette turned 60 and the Porsche 911 joined the big 5-0 club.
With a healthy respect for our elders, we start with Aston Martin. Aston celebrated with the little piece of retro insanity called the CC100 Speedster concept. The windshield-less roadster owes much to the DBR1 race car of the 1950s, but it uses that heritage within a forward-looking design flush with the latest materials and equipment. Unique elements include the door cutouts, split two-seat cockpit and stunning carbon fiber/leather interior. The car is powered by Aston's latest AM11 6.0-liter V12 engine, which helps it kick through the 62 mph (100 km/h) door in just over four seconds on its way to 180 mph (290 km/h).
The CC100 is a celebratory one-off, so don't expect to see it at the dealership the next time you're in the market for a new Aston.
Lamborghini may only be half the age of Aston, but it took its birthday celebration to even greater heights, with not one, but three wild concept cars. We had a tough time narrowing the field of Veneno, Egoista andVeneno Roadster, but eventually we came to the conclusion that theEgoista is truly the most radical of the bunch.
Lamborghini's four-wheeled trident is built around a single-seat cockpit inspired by a helicopter, a cockpit so tight and dialed in that the driver actually has to remove the steering wheel to get in and out through the opened glass enclosure. As if the car's entire styling package isn't quite extreme enough, the orange glasshouse, wheels and accents scream out violently to get your attention. The Egoista is powered by a 600-hp 5.2-liter V10, but Lamborghini didn't go into other performance details when it revealed it in May, perhaps because the one-off will not be sold..
McLaren didn't go nuts with a wild,
special-edition design for its birthday, but it didn't really have to. The all-new P1 was a more-than-generous present to itself and its most loyal fans. We included the P1 in last year's top concepts list, so we we'll skim over it with the recently inked specs: sub seven seconds around the Nürburgring-Nordschleife (you can see that in the video down below), 0-62 mph in 2.8 seconds, 0-124 mph (200 km/h) in 6.8 seconds and 217 mph (350 km/h) at the top end.

NVIDIA Tegra Shield 2013
A new kind of open gaming device needs a new kind of development process.
Rather than being secretive about SHIELD and what it can do, we decided to bring gamers in on the conspiracy, announcing our plan to bring a portable gaming device with console-class controls and a high-def 5-inch screen to market in January at the Consumer Electronics Show.
Most of all, we wanted this device to be open and provide the best possible experience—whether you’re playing Android or PC games, or enjoying your favorite movies, music, and other apps on the go.
Since then, we’ve put SHIELD in the hands of thousands of gamers. Some have been professional press. Others have been inside our own company. But most have been people like the tens of thousands who streamed through our booth at PAX East and E3.
And their reactions have been more than just positive.
They’ve helped us build a better product. Feedback from gamers is why SHIELD’s triggers have the perfect throw length. Why SHIELD’s buttons have just the right amount of give. Why SHIELD’s thumb sticks are so satisfying to flick. Why playing games on SHIELD’s pure Android software feels so slick.
The result: while SHIELD isn’t available until June 27th – we’re making that official today – it’s already grabbed awards by the fistful – including dozens of ‘Best of Show’ awards at CES, Computex and E3.
Now it’s time for one more change.
We’ve heard from thousands of gamers that if the price was $299, we’d have a home run.
So we’re changing the price of SHIELD to $299.
If you’ve already pre-ordered SHIELD, you’ll be charged the new, lower price. You will only be charged $299 when the product ships.
We want to get SHIELD into the hands of as many gamers as possible.
That’s because we think they’ll have the same reaction to it as thousands of gamers already have: joy.

Hiroko - MIT's Folding Car
The Massachusetts Institution of Technology (MIT) has their sights set on being the catalyst for finally pushing the electric automobile revolution over the edge. In 2013, the Hinoko (meaning "urban car," pictured above) will be released to the masses across Europe (With a small few areas in the U.S.), making the Smart Car look even more ridiculous than it already does with its sleek design and new age features.
One of the best characteristics of the Hiroko is that it is incredibly easy to park in small spaces, with its ability to fit in one third of a parking space after being "folded" up. Yes, that's right, three of these things fit into one regular old parking space. Since European cities are known to be rather crowded, this will be a welcomed feature. The initial plan is for city governments to run a program similar to ZipCar, promoting the use of the Hiroko.
The downside? A 75 mile range, so don't go thinking you can start a new Hiroko Taxi service. You will fail. Miserably.

Smart Skin Phones
Samsung has filed a patent for smart device-skin which will supposedly be able to take any digital image, and display that image across the skin of the device.
The patent describes a layer of film that wraps the phone, covering the entire phone except the sockets, the camera, and the screen. Little else is known about this technology (other than it’s awesome), but it is described as a possible feature for an upcoming phone, as well as being available as an accessory to fit onto most other devices. While little information has been released to the public, including a release date, we do know of another upcoming Samsung device that just might be the aforementioned phone….
Us techno-geeks love giving new devices complicated, high-tech names. This provides an aura of mystery and excitement. Our next highly anticipated device is known as…

Xbox 720
There are rumors everywhere about the new Xbox system: it won’t have an optical drive, all games will be downloaded digitally, it’s called the Xbox Loop, it’s called theDurango...and the list goes on.
There are a few reliable rumors, however. The graphics are certainly being done by AMD, who claim that the graphic detail will be on the same level of Avatar. We can also certainly believe that the system is going to be released at E3 in 2013, as several companies working on the project have claimed.

Bendy Screen Smartphone
Yes, the bendy screen smartphone. For those of you who are technologically illiterate, a bendy screen smartphone is a smartphone touting a screen that we can bend!Yep. Who doesn’t want to bend and twist their phone into silly shapes sometimes? It's the best way to let out your anger, other than just throwing the thing against a wall.
Using Samsung’s already demoed OLED display technology, we can be expecting a new phone model that will allow us to bend it, roll it up, and hit it with a hammer. (YES!) We already have the specs for this phone as well. The phone debuted as the “Galaxy Skin” (wait..did that say…skin?) features a high-res 800×480 AMOLED screen, 8mp camera and 1Gb of RAM as well as a 1.2GHz processor.
Don’t be surprised to see bendy screen tablets released shortly after.

Fujitsu Lifebook 2013
Ok so you’re the guy who leaves home with a digital camera strung around his neck, a backpack to carry his laptop, a tablet in his briefcase, and a phone in his pocket? Well, you’re just weird. That said, Fujitsu has the answer for you…weird folk.
The Fujitsu Lifebook, coming in 2013, combines all of these fancy pieces of technology into one. Ditch everything else, keep the laptop backpack. Need a camera? Detach the laptop’s camera to be used as a handheld digital camera. Tablet? Open it up and pull that out as well. Put it back in and the tablet immediately displays itself as a touch-screen keyboard for the laptop. There is even a spot where you can attach and remove a special cell phone, which I imagine acts as the cellular modem for the laptop when attached. (Don’t be surprised if this allows you to make video phone calls from the laptop as well.)
The price is undetermined, but don’t expect it to be cheap.

4G will soon with Us.
in cell phone networks. What this means: your phone will download data about as fast as your home computer can. While you’ve probably seen lots of 4G banter from the big cell providers, it’s not very widely available in most phones. However, both Verizon and the EU intend to do away with 3G entirely by 2013, which will essentially bring broadband-level speeds to wireless devices on cell networks. It won’t do away with standard internet providers, but it will bring “worldwide WiFi” capabilities to anyone with a 4G data plan.
